WHAT?
Coronavirus disease or covid-19 is an
infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2
i.e.(SARS-CoV-2). It is a type of virus that is spread to any person comes into
the contact of an infected person.
HISTORY
The
virus is thought to be natural and have an animal origin ( a study reveals that
cats and ferrets appear to be highly susceptible to the disease while dogs
appear to be less susceptible with lower level of viral replication.) through spill
over infection. The actual origin is unknown but by December 2019 the spread of
infection was almost entirely driven by human to human transmission. A study of
first 41 cases of confirmed COVID-19 was published in January 2020 in THE
LANCET.

PANDEMIC
The
world health organization(W.H.O.) declared the 2019-20 coronavirus outbreak a
Public Health Emergency of International Concern(PHEIC) on 30th
January 2020 and a pandemic on 11th march 2020. Local transmission
of the disease has been recorded in most countries across all six WHO regions.
This virus is spreading in the whole world continuously with a very high
increasing rate.
TREATMENT

As
of April 2020, there is no specific treatment for COVID-19, research is however
ongoing. Some medical professionals recommend paracetamol (acetaminophen).
- ·
People
are managed with supportive care which may include fluid therapy, oxygen
support and supporting other affected vital organs are useful at early stage of
infection.

Personal
hygiene and a healthy lifestyle and diet have been recommended to improve
immunity.
- · There are mixed results as of 3 April 2020 as to the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for COVID-19, with some studies showing little or no improvement.
